Ruhumuriza withdraws from Tour de Kigali

FOUR-time Tour of Rwanda champion Abraham Ruhumuriza is not competing at this weekend’s Tour of Kigali, Bonnie Mugabe reports

The cycling ace yesterday claimed that he was not in good shape to compete in the two-day race.

Ruhumuriza told Times Sport yesterday that he is not in good form due to fatigue thus opted to rest and prepare effectively for the African cycling championship due next month.

"I’m still feeling the fatigue from the Commonwealth Games so I have decided to rest ahead of the African Cycling Championship and Tour of Rwanda,” he said.

With Adrien Niyonshuti’s involvement also a doubt, Nathan Byukusenge, who won last year’s edition is favourite to win still is the defending champions talked to this paper while in training in Gitarama that he is ready to retain the title.
"I am in good shape and ready to go,” Byukusenge told Times Sport from his Gitarama base.

"This is a good platform for the African Cycling Championship and Tour of Rwanda.”

In New Delhi, Byukusenge finished 33rd in 169km.
The tour of Kigali will start and end at Amahoro stadium. Riders will ride from the Stadium via Chez Lando- Gishushu- RDB- MTN Center- Nyarutarama-Kibagabaga hospital-KIE –Police and back to the stadium.

Male riders will traverse this route eight times while their female counterparts make three rounds.
