KIGALI - A Cabinet meeting on Wednesday appointed John Mirenge as the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of RwandAir.
Mirenge takes over from Rene Janata who was appointed CEO of the national carrier in May this year.

Janata who prior to his new appointment, was working with the German airline Lufthansa as the e-Project manager in the Customer Intelligence department, will be "reassigned” other duties at the airline.

Mirenge is not new at the airline as he has been the board chairman and was the acting CEO for 3 months before the appointment of Janata who took over from Amb. Gerald Zirimwabagabo.

In an interview with The New Times, Mirenge said that he will be preoccupied with the strategic plan of the government to build RwandAir into an efficient, well managed airline which every Rwandan should be proud of.

"I will focus on improving customer service, efficiency and ensuring that the airline works in a reliable manner,” Mirenge said.

He added that as part of the process to overhaul the national carrier, the airline has embarked on a plan to hire more experienced technical persons who will add value to the airline and also boost its fleet.

On top of acquiring two new Boeing 737-500, RwandAir also boasts of two CRJ-200 acquired last year as well as several small aircrafts for local and regional flights.

Earlier this year, Mirenge told The New Times that RwandAir is undergoing a major overhauling process which has seen some senior officials who were not hired in a transparent manner leave and staff problems sorted out.

The airline has since relocated its head offices to the airport, and according to Mirenge, it is part of the plan to make the airline function in a more efficient manner.
