HUYE - Two men who were allegedly selling fake gold have been arrested and detained at Ngoma Police Station in Huye district.

Jean Twizeyimana and his colleague, only identified as Mbarushiyeze, were arrested on Tuesday in Rwabuye business centre near Huye town, three days after they had hoodwinked about three residents into buying their stones at one million francs.

Police sources said that the two were arrested with a pack of stones they used to con their unsuspecting victims.
According to residents, the duo has been exploiting the ignorance of some residents to sell them fake precious stones.

Upon arrest, the suspects acknowledged having received the money, insisting that their gold was genuine.

In August of this year, Mbarushiyeze, one of the suspects, was also arrested on the same charges but later released.
One of the victims who declined to be named told The New Times that they had trusted the suspected conmen.

"For the first time, I met with four men with a pack containing real gold. I immediately contacted two of my colleagues as I thought it was an interesting business. Last Saturday we contacted the men but unfortunately for this time they gave us fake gold and disappeared with one million francs we had paid them,” the victim narrated.

"We knew that we had been conned only after verifying that it was indeed fake gold.”
