RWAMAGANA - Five people died in the latest accident involving a Tanzanian registered trailer and a Fuso truck, on Tuesday night, on the Kigali-Rwamagana highway.

The accident took place at 10pm, approximately 60 km from Kigali, at a place called Kabuga ka Musha in Musha sector-when the trailer lost control and rammed into the truck, killing five occupants of the two vehicles on the spot.

The deceased were identified as Ernest Kayitare, 55, a resident of Rwamagana, the Fuso truck driver and two other occupants who were aboard the ill fated vehicle.
Others are Vicente Leonard Magiku, the trailer driver, a resident of Tabora in Tanzania together with his assistant Rashid Lisu Mfangi of Singida.

When The New Times visited the scene of the accident, the bodies of the trailer occupant were still stuck in mangled wreck of the vehicle down the slope of a steep hill.

The Police blamed the Tanzanian trailer drivers, in general, for irresponsible driving, especially at night.
"We need to make a thorough investigation. Who knows,  such a driver could have been driving under influence of drugs,” a Police officer said at the scene.

"there is an indication that the accident must have been caused by careless driving. Chances are very high that the real driver must have handed over the truck to his inexperienced assistant  who must have ended up causing the accident.”

Jean Paul Nzabonimana, a resident of the area, said that the trailers tend to move at a very high speed after 6pm when traffic police have left.

"I think the authorities should think about restricting the movement of these trailers after 6pm. They drive recklessly and are always dangerous to other road users,” he said.
The accident is one of many that have involved Tanzania registered vehicles in last few months.
