GICUMBI — Police in Byumba are holding three men who allegedly killed a 50-year old man on Monday night. Jean Claude Nshimiyimana, 24, allegedly conspired with his friends Alphonse Munyemana and Jean Damacean Mbariyehe both aged 25 to murder his father Athanase Mbarubukeye of Gacurabwenge Cell, in Byumba Sector.

Police sources allege the suspects hatched the plan  on the fateful night while drinking local potent gin commonly known as Kanyanga at Mbariyehe’s home in Nyarutarama cell of Byumba Sector. They then reportedly went and called the deceased at around midnight in the pretext that they had his message.

"As soon as he opened the door, his own son Nshimiyimana was the first one to strike him with a hammer on the head killing him instantly,” said Munyemana, one of the suspects at the police station.

Other family members and neighbors reportedly sounded an alarm that attracted police intervention to arrest the suspects as they tried to escape. By press time Mbarubukeye’s body was still lying at Byumba Hospital Mortuary, pending burial arrangements.
