Thirteen Rwandan journalists will tomorrow set off for India to undertake a month-long training on developmental reporting.
The training dubbed, ‘In-Service Development Journalism Training Programme’ will offer upgraded skills to reporters from news agencies, print and electronic media houses.
According to the Director General in the Ministry of Information, Ignatius Kabagambe, 16 journalists were selected for the training, but due to unforeseen reasons, three failed to make it.
"This is one of the many opportunities Rwanda is tapping from the Commonwealth and this justifies exactly why the country had to join the bloc,” said Kabagambe.
Justifying the selection criterion, Kabagambe said that Commonwealth had requested the first bunch with journalists to come from the most vibrant media houses.
"Usually, this is a three-month course but it has been condensed to one month, meaning the journalists will be studying day and night,” said Kabagambe. The New Times’ Charles Kwizera, said that he expects to benefit a lot from the training.
"I expect to gain more knowledge as far as my journalistic work is concerned,” said Kwizera.
Martin Kasirye, a radio presenter said: "my main target from this training is to improve on my skill. That is why I don’t want to waste even a single minute of this training.”
Some of the courses that the journalists will be offered include, Introduction to communication, Reporting and Editing, Economic Journalism, media freedom and media law and ethics.
