US-based Adonis Filer has rejoined Rwanda Energy Group (REG) ahead of the 2023 Basketball Africa League which tips off on March 11 in Dakar, Senegal.
A reliable source from the club’s management confirmed to Times Sport that an agreement has been reached and signed, pointing out that the star point guard is expected to join the club in February.
Filer, 29, also confirmed the news, citing that the agreement allows him to represent the REG-powered side in the much-anticipated BAL 2023 season.
By and large, his scoring rate and dictation of play are among top qualities that define the player who was a key figure in league champions’ past two successful seasons when they won two consecutive league titles (2021 and 2022) that earned them back-to-back qualification to the continental basketball showpiece.
Asked whether he could also feature on the club’s roster for the ongoing national league, Filer said that current negotiations are prospective, adding that "REG has been home for the past two years.”
In November last year, Adonis agreed on a short-term deal to play for Burundian side Urunani during the BAL 2023 qualifiers but later left the club after failing to qualify for the competition’s regular season in March.
Adonis was a key figure during REG’s BAL endeavors last season, contributing a higher number of assists during the tournament, in addition to scoring and dictating the play.
One of the great games he played during the BAL was against AS Sale where he not only scored REG with 14 points, but also established a new BAL record with 14 assists.
Born and raised in Chicago, Illinois, United States, Adonis is a familiar name in the Rwandan basketball circle, especially in 2020 when he played for the Patriots, putting up a good display after which he was summoned to the National Basketball team for the second round of the 2021 Afrobasket qualifiers.
