RUTSIRO - Two Rutsiro District officials have resigned, following reports that they had forged degrees acquired from a university in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Viateur Hakizimpfura (in charge of health) and Oscar Bazimaziki (Internal Auditor) handed in their resignation letters Monday morning.

The district Vice Mayor in charge Economic affairs, Jean Damascène Nsanzimfura, confirmed the resignations.
"It is not the resignations that have raised concerns …there has been an ongoing internal investigation to establish the authenticity of their documents,” Nsanzimfura said.

He added that their resignation comes a month after an audit report indicating loopholes in the management of public funds was released.

The report shows that there were inflated expenditures in payments for food supplies meant for youth attending national civic education commonly, known as Itorero ry’Igihugu, according to Nsanzimfura. It also mentioned missing equipment, although Hakizimpfura was not cited in the report.

Efforts to contact the two were futile as their (known) mobile phones were switched off.
