MUHANGA — Police in Nyamabuye sector are holding a couple who were allegedly found with opium worth Frw3m.
François Ndagijyimana, 42, and Yvonne Batamuliza, 31, residents of Gahogo Cell were arrested last Friday after police landed on a bag of the drugs at their home, during a security swoop.

Police sources said the duo were to appear in court on Monday [yesterday] for prosecution. Batamuliza admitted possession of the drugs but her husband (Ndagijyimana) allegedly a driver with Strabag Construction Company denied knowledge of the drugs.

"These drugs were delivered by my brother (Innocent Kayiranga) - who is imprisoned at Mulindi military barracks on similar charges, there is a Congolese woman who has been involved, and I do have information on the deal,” Batamuliza said.

The New Times could not independently verify information on Kayiranga’s detention but Batamuliza said that he [Kayiranga] was arrested for dealing in drugs and had assigned her to "keep the business moving.”

Asked details on their business, Batamuliza said she had kept the drugs for six months but had no more details. Gitarama town has since last year battled the problem of drug abuse among taxi conductors, football fans and cinema goers.
