RWAMAGANA/KAYONZA - Population Service International (PSI) Rwanda, has taken its services nearer to rural population’s homes, conducting HIV counselling and testing in the districts of Rwamagana and Kayonza.

Elodie Ndagira, officer in charge of Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT), PSI, told The New Times, yesterday, that they took the services nearer to the people to encourage more participation.

She added that experience has shown that decentralization of such services has been more effective.

"It is particularly important as a starting point for accessing other HIV/AIDS-related services. We have brought services closer to people…the local medical people and counsellors will continue with treatment and counselling,” he said.

Vestine Gitembe, the area Executive Secretary, reiterated the importance of the exercise, that should see more people embracing preventive medicine rather than curative approaches.

"It is important that more people to embrace testing as away of curbing some of the health challenges facing society,” she said.

Omar Murangwa, 53, a resident of Kigabiro Sector, said he was happy to see testing services extended closer to his home.

"I have been hearing PSI services in the media, now that they are here; I have to take this chance and test my status. I know they will also advise me on how to behave depending on my HIV status,” he said.

PSI officials started the campaign in the two districts, targeting the most populated areas closer to local public markets.
