Defilement and assault were some of the top crimes committed in various sectors of Huye District in the last three months, latest reports from Police in the district indicate.

The figures released on Monday, during a district security meeting, show that a total of 22 defilement and seven rape cases were reported in the period between July and September.

The district recorded 43 cases of assault, the highest category of crimes and 28 cases of drug use. Ngoma Sector tops in crime with 53 cases reported in the last three months.

Delivering the district security report, the district Police commander, Superintendent Desire Twizere, called upon local leaders from the district to take concrete measures to arrest the situation before it gets out of hand.

"These are cases that were reported to Police but there could be many more that were concealed from the authorities,” Supt. Twizere said.

In the last three months alone, Police in the district received 943 complaints from the public, while 557 people were detained at Police stations in the district for various crimes.

"All local leaders should be concerned by the rise in crime in the district, we need concerted efforts in curbing the situation,” added the district Police chief.

Most of the cases reported in the district were blamed on drug use and the consumption of illicit brew.
According to the Ngoma Sector Executive Secretary, Pascal Sahundwa, heavy fines await people caught dealing in the banned brew.

"Dealers have failed to give it up because it is a lucrative business,” said Sahundwa.

The same meeting was addressed by the 4th Division Commander, Brigadier General Mubarakh Muganga, who in a lecture on leadership, called upon district leaders to exercise their leadership roles.

"You must always put the interests of the people you lead before your own, keep informed and share information with relevant authorities as a proactive action to prevent crime,” Muganga advised.
