GICUMBI — Mayor of Gicumbi district Bonane Nyangezi has advised Byumba residents to grow fruits, Vegetables and horticulture because the crops have ready domestic and foreign market. He was addressing residents at Gacurabwenge Primary School after communal work last Saturday.
"Hard work is the only solution to eradicate poverty in society,” said Nyangezi.
Also present were the coordinator of selected seeds in the Ministry of Agriculture’s, Rwanda Horticulture Development Authority [RHODA] Peter Muvara, and the district executive secretary Maximillian Niyonzima.
Muvara advised residents to heed the mayor’s advice by forming cooperative societies. She assured the farmers of RHODA’s support in training farmers, offering selected seeds and securing market for their produce.
"Unlike other countries of the world where flowers are grown in glass houses, Rwanda’s climate is favorable for flowers, fruits and vegetable growth throughout the year,” said Muvara.
Hundreds of residents turned up for communal work. They planted trees and grass along the road through Byumba town to Gicumbi stadium, cleared the bush around Gacurabwenge Primary School and collected rubbish in and around Byumba town.
