With much enthusiasm I support the move by UNFPA - United Nations Population Fund - to launch the State of the World Population 2010 Report on October 20.

This comes after the UN Security Council passed a landmark resolution 10 years ago calling on governments to protect women from rape during wartime and to tap the power of women to keep the peace and rebuild societies once fighting has stopped.

I welcome this report because it will show the extent to which accomplishments have been made in places affected by war, military occupation or natural disasters. It will also show the special challenges faced by countries that have endured both political instability and natural disaster.

As a result, the various challenges will be accorded solutions, and more developmental progress will be attained.
