Niyonshuti eyes DCM Cape Pioneer Trek title

TWO-time Tour of Rwanda champion Adrien Niyonshuti has a podium finish in sight in the six-day DCM Cape Pioneer Trek mountain bike tour which paces off this morning in South Africa.

TWO-time Tour of Rwanda champion Adrien Niyonshuti has a podium finish in sight in the six-day DCM Cape Pioneer Trek mountain bike tour which paces off this morning in South Africa.

Niyonshuti, who is fresh from the Commonwealth Games were he finished 19th in the 40km individual time trial race, is riding for South Africa’s MTN Energade.

"For such races, consistency is very important,” the 23-year-old rider noted.

Niyonshuti has enjoyed a good season in South Africa. In the MTN ultra-marathon series, he has produced five top five finishes in six outings.

His best result is a 2nd spot finish in the MTN 50 Miler. He finished 4th in Barberton and 5th in Attakwas, Clarens and Cullinan races.

He also won the Tyger Valley and Down and Dirty races in the Nissan-series.

For Niyonshuti, the race is a build up to next month’s African Continental Road Cycling Championship.

The tour which runs from November 4 to 8 will be staged in Rwanda. Some of the countries expected to take part include South Africa, Mauritius, Cameroon, Ivory Coast, Kenya, Uganda, Burundi, France, Holland and Team Type I of USA.
