MUSANZE - The Governor of Northern Province, Aime Bosenibamwe, has challenged local leadership in Musanze district to ensure proper mechanisms for coordination of grassroots development activities in their respective jurisdictions.

Speaking during a meeting to assess the progress attained in rural transformation in Musanze, on Wednesday, Bosenibamwe observed that much as some level of progress could be seen,  there was still much more that needed to be done especially in  tackling the slow pace of  implementing projects in almost all fields.

"The priorities have been set, especially regarding the transformation of Musanze town. We now need to work hard in areas such as implementing the master plan which also entails  the beautification of the town centre,” he said.

At the meeting, sector leaders revealed that  non volcanic zone which covers  the biggest part  of the district  was lagging behind in terms of agricultural  out put, and terracing, while the volcanic zones still have a huge size of non productive banana plantations.

The four sectors of Kinigi, Gataraga, Nyange and Shingiro which collectively have the highest number of grass thatched houses were given four months to eliminate such structures by helping poor families to access iron sheets.

In Muko sector, it was reported that farmers who were asked to cut down the unproductive banana plants had not received the improved banana suckers which were promised by the district.

The district mayor, Winifrida Mpebymungu, said that the district has embarked on plans to fast track the transformation of the district through developing new physical infrastructure and embracing the crop intensification programme.

The meeting resolved that district workers should have study tours in order to learn from other successful projects else where.
