IN just minutes, Dieudonne Disi went from being a medal hopeful to a flop in Delhi.
The long distance ace hobbled off the full marathon track after just 10km citing a nagging pain in his left leg.
The 29-year-old now needs to find a lasting cure for recurring injuries that have hampered his 2010 season.
On a lighter note however, Gervais Nizeyimana and Rachid Safari gave Rwanda some hope for the future after finishing 12th and 15th respectively.
Nizeyimana, who is only making a comeback from a tendonitis injury clocked 2.24.58 while Safari hit a personal best of 2.30.02.
In testing hot and humid conditions through the deserted streets of central New Delhi, John Kelai gave Kenya her first men’s marathon title in 20 years after using 2:14.35. He finished 53 seconds ahead of Australia’s Michael Shelley while his Kenyan compatriot Amos Matui settled for bronze.
It was double joy for the East African nation as Irene Kosgei and Irene Mogake sealed a 1-2 finish in the women marathon.
Lisa Weightman of Australia took bronze. Kenya topped the athletics medal list ahead of Australia for the first time, vindicating their decision to send a near full-strength team to India.
Rwanda’s Epiphanie Nyirabarame clocked 2.48.24 to finish 7th. The team returns this morning aboard Ethiopian Airways.
