The National Post Office earnings for 2009 increased to Rwf 79 million from Rwf 28 million in 2008, the institution’s Director General, Celestin Kayitare has said.

The official revealed this to The New Times on Friday, shortly after a ceremony organized to mark the World Post Day that took place at Post Office Headquarters in Kacyiru.

"The rise in our earnings comes as a result of a good teamwork spirit that has made our clients notice improvements in customer care services, hence better service delivery,” Kayitare said.

He also commended strategies being implemented by the Government in promoting ICT, saying it is a steep that has strongly promoted postal activates as well as making their operations easier.

"Reducing a large percentage of our expenses and closing idle branches to concentrate on active ones` has helped us regain an encouraging financial position,” Kayitare observed. 

The World Post Day is celebrated every year on October 9 and is aimed at checking the performance on quality of service provision towards development in the about 190 countries that subscribe to the Universal Postal Union to which Rwanda is a member.

The event was officiated by the Permanent Secretary in Ministry of ICT in the Office of the President, David Kanamugire.

In his speech, Kanamugire commended the staff members of the post office saying that they are the reason the institution has raised its financial portfolio, encouraging them to maintain this and even aim higher.

"The institution is currently in a healthy financial situation but still, you need to maintain to even become exemplary service providers,” Kanamugire said.

He called upon them to always utilize the available opportunities to advance their skills so as to keep abreast the technology advancement.

The National Post Office currently operates with 17 branches in the country, employing 128 permanent workers and 50 working on a contract basis.
