IT was a tough day at the office for Rwanda’s cyclists as they struggled to come to terms with the hot conditions in New Delhi.

Nathan Byukusenge and four-time Tour of Rwanda champion Abraham Ruhumuriza finished 33rd and 51st while Nicodem Habiyambere, Gasore Hategeka and Adrien Niyonshuti all failed to finish the grueling 168km road race on day 8 of the 2010 Commonwealth Games.

Byukusenge, who clocked 3 hours, 57 minutes and 10 seconds, was a whole seven minutes and 22 seconds behind overall winner Allan Davis from Australia.

Niyonshuti, who rides for South Africa’s MTN Energade, clashed mid-way the race while Hategeka and Habiyambere pulled out due to mechanical damage.
Davis waited until the last lap before powering past the leading pack.

Hayden Roulston took silver; David Millar of Scotland won bronze while Britain’s Mark Cavendish, who is regarded as the fastest sprinter in the world, finished a distant seventh.

Out of 132 riders who started the race, only 52 riders managed to reach the finish line.

The gold medal maintained Australia’s form at the Games. The women’s 112-km race was also won by Davis’ compatriot Rochelle Gilmore.
