Rwanda’s schools’ select side put up an impressive performance in yesterday’s Uganda 2010 Schools Independence Cup held at Jinja Dam Waters rugby grounds.
The team comprising mainly Apred Ndera secondary school players, who won this year’s Rwanda schools rugby 7s tourney was pooled with last year’s champs, St.Mary’s College Kisubi (SMACK), Kyambogo and Greenhills Academy.
The Rwandan side registered decent albeit painful losses to SMACK (20-5) and Kyambogo (10-7) but managed to beat Greenhills (17-0) to book a place in the Bowl category.
The team then went all out and humiliated Muhire Secondary School, 30-0, to set up a Bowl final clash with SMACK.
Rwanda select could not avenge its earlier loss to their Ugandan opponents as the latter were also fighting for pride. The game ended 14-7 in favour of SMACK.
Hana Mixed School beat Uganda school rugby power house, Namilyango College, to lift the Main Cup trophy. Other trophy categories included the plate and shield.
Rwanda’s scorers in the tournament included Brian Shema, Eric Twikirize, Steven Kwizera, Nardi Cyrille Muhize and Jean Damascene Biseruka.
"The boys played their hearts out. They just need more 7s games, they lack the experience of the Ugandan and Kenyan schools,” Vincent Kamali, one of the team managers alongside Olivier Nuwamahoro, said.
