Smugglers of illicit brew arrested

GATSIBO - Police in Gatsibo district Thursday arrested two men who were attempting to smuggle illicit brew from Uganda to Rwamagana.

According to police at Gatsibo Police post, the suspects, identified as Silvere Nzabagerageza and Rusine Kayitani, were arrested separately while carrying cartons of Suzie and Leading Waragi, illicit brew manufactured in Uganda..

"The first was arrested while attempting to pass a police check point with 120 bottles of Leading Waragi packed in a bag. The second was arrested the next morning carrying 15 cartons of Chief Waragi and Suzie at around 8 AM,” a Police official said.

Speaking to The Sunday Times at Kiramuruzi Police post on Friday, Rusine Kayitani said that he was arrested while coming from buying the brew in Mwanjara-Uganda.

"I packed it in half jerry cans and covered them with tomatoes to confuse police at check points,” he said.
When asked where he was transporting them to, Kayitani said that he had been sent by a woman called Mama Mutesi who lives in Rwamagana.

"There is a woman called mama Mutesi in Rwamagana whom I was supplying these cartons,” he said.
