KIGALI - Kigali City Council (KCC) is set to spend Rwf1.5 billion on enhancing the city’s hygiene levels as well as beauty.

This was revealed yesterday by Jean d’Arc Gakuba, the Vice Mayor in charge of social affairs in Kigali, while addressing stakeholders at Nyamirambo Stadium.

She said the exercise will be conducted in accordance with the new rules and regulations enacted by the Ministry of Local Government on how to improve the general cleanliness in towns.

The Vice Mayor urged them to plant flowers and trees alongside their office premises and homes and to also rehabilitate roads in their communities.

"90 percent of schools, especially primary schools, in Kigali, have no playgrounds with grass and during break and lunch time, students play in dusty playgrounds. This is a big challenge that needs to be addressed as soon as possible” Gakuba said.

Speaking to The New Times shortly after the meeting, Gakuba said that the meeting was aimed at discussing with sanitation stakeholders how to implement the new regulations in their institutions.

She said that new programs will see all schools, hospitals, churches and government institutions plant gardens and trees.
