Rubavu district in the Western Province was on Tuesday awarded Rwf 4 million for being the best district in the country to foster education activities, paying teachers’ salaries on time and clearing teachers’ arrears.

The cash award was handed over during World Teachers’ Day celebrations by the Education Ministry.
The Education Minister, Dr Charles Murigande, thanked the district for creating an environment that favours growth of the education sector.

"Education is a very vital pillar of development of a country, thus we need to do more for the development of our people,” Murigande said.

The district Mayor, Sheikh Hassan Bahame, told The New Times that the prize money would encourage the district to do more to foster development of the education sector.
"We beat others in education activities like submitting reports on time, paying teachers’ salaries and we owe no money to teachers,” Bahame said.

Rubavu district was followed by Rulindo district from Northern Rwanda and Huye district in the Southern province.

Bahame added he is positive that Rubavu will also  emerge on top  in construction of facilities needed  to implement the 9-Year Basic Education in the country.

"We are budgeting for the four million we received. I think it will be allocated to the same sector since some teachers still lack basic tools,” said Bahame.
