MUHANGA - Police in Muhanga district has mounted an operation to curb down the processing of illegal brew in the district.

The Thursday operation revealed one of the distilling sites in Gahogo cell, Nyamabuye sector and three people were arrested in connection with the illicit brewing business.

Police said the move was part of efforts to stem crimes in the area, adding that more operations will be extended to other areas prone to illegal brewing, such as Shyogwe sector.

Local leaders, were however, blamed for not being vigilant.
Upon being arrested, Francine Mukanyandwi, one of the suspects, claimed ignorance of the ban on her business.
Police recovered some chemicals reportedly used by brewers to come up with a crude mixture, commonly known as "Igikwangari.’

"I make banana wine and I thought it is okay. I am not aware of these chemicals, because I use yeast and bananas,” Mukanyandwi while begging to be forgiven.  

The government banned the liquor on the basis of poor hygiene and its ability to negatively  impact on the health of residents.
