Editor,
I was shocked to read in The Daily Nation, Kenya’s biggest newspaper, about the suspension of primary school teachers for having impregnated their pupils.
Personally, I think that they should not only have been suspended indefinitely, but also prosecuted for rape. Teachers must be the people we trust the most with our young children and when they aren’t worthy of that trust it’s unfortunate.
It is my hope that we don’t have a problem of teachers raping their students here in Rwanda. With all the challenges we, as a country face in the education sector, most especially ,when it comes to increasing girls enrolment, we cannot afford to have teachers abusing our children.
I certainly hope that if ANY teacher, secondary or primary, impregnates any girl, he faces a long jail term. We must have a zero-tolerance policy where our children are concerned.
