POLICE are holding two suspects in connection with the death of the head teacher of Rwikiniro School in Rwimbogo sector, Gatsibo District.

The headmaster, Johnson Ndinda, died on Wednesday evening at King Faisal Hospital where he had been admitted after an attack in which he sustained several cuts on the head a fortnight ago.

The Director of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Superintendent Costa Habyara confirmed the arrests yesterday.

"We have already arrested two people who are suspected to have played a role in the death of the head teacher,” Habyara said by phone, but didn’t have the names of the suspects readily available.

Ndinda was attacked on January 14  by panga-wielding assailants.

He was first rushed to nearby Kiziguro hospital. He was later transferred to King Faisal Hospital in Kigali where he went through a brain operation before he died.

Relatives say Ndinda, 55, would wake up in the night to check on the cows to make sure they did not graze in neighbouring gardens.

He reportedly met his attackers at the door on his return from the kraal. A doctor source at King Faisal Hospital confirmed Ndinda after brain operation.

"Part of his brain had been largely damaged,” the doctor who declined to be named because he doesn’t speak on behalf of the hospital said.

His elder son, Frank Mugabo, had earlier said that area leaders including sector executive secretary and police exhibited high level of negligence.
