The Ministry of Health, yesterday, announced that remarkable achievements had been registered geared towards ensuring proper healthcare for Rwandans.

The health sector, just like many others in the country, was destroyed by the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi. For it to rebuild from scratch and get to a level admired in the world over, is quite something.

Unique initiatives like the e-Health programme, which has seen thousands of phones distributed to heath workers in villages across the country and are subsequently saving lives, should be maintained to ensure continuous growth of the sector.

Mechanisms like the Economic Development and Poverty Reduction Strategy (EDPRS) and the Millennium Development Goals, should constantly be used as benchmarks to measure how far our health sector has reached. e.

The private sector should also consider investing in the health domain. There is still room for more facilities, especially now that the government is targeting to have health facilities closer to the people.

The public too, should endeavour to always subscribe to health insurance and live healthily. Habits such as healthy eating, regular exercising and sleeping under mosquito nets can go a long way in ensuring a healthy population.

For these remarkable achievements to be sustained, we must not only consolidate them, but also aim higher.
