NYAMIRAMBO - She carried it in her womb for nine months only to sell it off three months after delivery.

Clementine Uwase is in police detention on allegations of selling her baby boy to one Brigitte Kampire, who is equally held at Nyamirambo Police Station. Police Spokesperson, Inspector Willy Marcel Higiro, confirmed the arrests on Wednesday.  Uwase, 20, exchanged the baby with Frw100,000 she received in form of a cheque (no. BB2423682) from Kampire.

The money was to be drawn on Kampire’s husband’s account in Banque de Kigali (BK).
Higiro said Uwase was arrested on Sunday while Kampire was nabbed the following day.

"It is our first time to have such a case but it is punishable by between five years and life imprisonment,” a police officer at Kicukiro Police Station, where the accused were detained earlier said.  Kampire had earlier deceived her husband, Francois Ntacyobazi, that she was pregnant.

She afterwards phoned Ntacyobazi who is a businessman that she was going to her aunt’s home in Kanombe, a Kigali City suburb, as she awaited delivery.  Her husband gave her Frw 200,000 to support her before and during delivery. But she instead used the money to stay in a lodge at Giporoso where she struck a deal with the lodge worker only identified as Claude to get her a new-born baby.

Claude then linked Kampire to Uwase, a sex worker, who negotiated the price for the baby. After agreeing on the price, Kampire left the lodge for her brother’s home in Kacyiru where Uwase brought her the baby two days later.

Kampire immediately called the husband and told him to come with Frw100, 000 to pay a debt she had acquired to clear hospital bills.

Ntacyobazi gave her a cheque to clear the debt as the wife requested. It is the same cheque that Kampire gave to Uwase to settle the purchase of the baby.

However, Jeanette Murekatete, another sex worker and Uwase’s niece, reported the incident to Kabeza Police Post because Uwase refused to give her a cut of the money.  Kampire claimed that she was pressurised by her in-laws to have a baby.

Ntacyobazi dismissed his wife’s claims saying that his family had no problem with her because they knew she could get treatment and be able to deliver.

Higiro said that Ntacyobazi already had one child before marrying Kampire who also had three children from a previous marriage.
He said that Ntacyobazi told police that he had wondered why the baby seemed older than normal, but that this wife convinced him that she had taken long to deliver because she had been bewitched.

Police found when Kampire receiving the kind of care and treatment like any other woman who has just given birth.  And when members of her family and that of the husband visited to congratulate her but could not see the baby, with Kampire telling them that it was in deep sleep. |
