The Rwanda National Police yesterday confirmed holding two Ugandan men arrested last month on Cyanika border post on the Rwandan side without proper travel documents suspected.

According to the Police Spokesperson Supt. Eric Kayiranga, the duo Simpson Mpirirwe, a businessman, and Didas Ndamiye, an accountant with the Kabale-based Radio Kigezi were suspected of being involved in activities of a "serious criminal nature.”

"On 19th September at around 4:30pm, at Cyanika Border Post on the Rwandan side, Security organs arrested two Ugandan citizens who had crossed the border illegally without any travel documents,”

"After arresting them, the Commissioner General informed his Ugandan Counterpart, the Inspector General of Police. The two were interrogated and they are suspected to have been involved in activities of a serious nature,” Kayiranga told The New Times.

The Police Spokesperson said that yesterday afternoon, the Ugandan High Commissioner to Rwanda Richard Kabonero was allowed to visit the two men detained at Kicukiro Police Post, as investigations into their case continue.

"All I can assure you is that the two men have been accorded their rights, including good care while in detention such as good food, good beds and they not complaining as we speak,” Kayiranga said.

Kayiranga said that investigations into their case still continue and they will be presented before courts of law when time comes.

The Ugandan High Commissioner yesterday confirmed that he visited the duo in their detention and that they are in good health.

"I saw them at about 5PM and they are in good health. They didn’t express any fears, all they wish is for the investigations to be rapidly carried out so that they can have their day in court or be released,” said the envoy.

"According to the Government, their case is a criminal case and investigations still continue. Our request is that the charges, if there are any, should be instituted, but what we want is for the investigations to be completed as soon as possible so that they can be charged or released,” Kabonero said.

He added that the Ugandan High Commission will continue to give them consular services and accord them legal consul when the time comes.
