KIGALI - The Rwanda National Police is holding two men suspected to have been involved in the murder of a Ugandan foreign exchange dealer, Evarist Akandinda, who was on Sunday morning found dead in Gakenke District in the Northern Province.

According to Police Spokesperson, Supt. Eric Kayiranga, Akandida’s body was discovered by residents in the morning in what is suspected to have been a case of robbery.
The deceased is reported to have been carrying a large sum of money at the time of his death.

"He left Gatuna border on the Ugandan side Sunday morning proceeding to Kigali with an unknown amount of money which he was taking where people change money,” Kayiranga explained.

"There, he met money changers and the last time he was seen was at around 1:30 PM. The following morning he was found dead in an area near Nemba Hospital in Gakenke District, not in Kigali as reported,” Kayiranga said.
He added that the following day, family member identified him and also revealed that he was carrying huge sums of money.

Kayiranga added that the money was missing from the murder scene and it is suspected that the thugs carried the money in the polythene bag they used to suffocate the deceased.

"We shared this information with our Ugandan counterparts and their Inspector General of Police is aware of this. The Criminal Investigations Department issued the body repatriation certificate and it was taken by his family for burial,” he said.

He stressed that Police is doing whatever is in its capacity to investigate this case.

"Two suspects have already been apprehended and investigations continue. This is a criminal act like any other that can happen anywhere in the world,” Kayiranga told The New Times.
