KIGALI - Residents of Gikondo Sector in Kicukiro District were yesterday joined by the national army and police in building eight classrooms at Groupe Scolaire, Gikondo, as part of the 9-Year Basic Education (9-YBE) programme.
The activity  was under the theme "Loving your country is to work hard to prove patriotism.”

"Our target is to make over 7,000 bricks today given the urgent need for them,” Lt Col Happy Ruvusha, Commander 9th Battalion told The Sunday Times during the event.
"We have been and we shall always work with the community, not only in promoting education but the community as a whole.”

The police Spokesperson, Eric Kayiranga, said that it is in the police’s mandate to work with the population in every national concern.

Kicukiro District Mayor, Paul Jules Ndamage, commended the two public institutions saying that they have highly contributed to the districts` excellent performance in implementing various programmes.

"We have always worked together with the army and police and last year we managed to build 65 classrooms,” Ndamage said.

"This year, we aim at constructing 79 classrooms and by December 15, we must have achieved our mission.”

Meanwhile, last week, Kicukiro District launched a strategy dubbed "One block per household” aimed at encouraging effective household participation in classroom construction.

Last year, the Ministry of Education awarded Kicukiro District for being the best in supporting the 9-YBE programme after constructing 65 classrooms.
