71 women from various districts have completed intensive training in modern farming techniques. Action Aid, an International NGO, organized the training that attracted participants from Nyanza, Nyaruguru, Musanze, and Karongi districts.

The trainees toured Gako organic farming training centre in Masaka Sector, Kicukiro District. Speaking to The New Times, Action Aid’s head of partnership development, fundraising and communication, Sulah Nuwamanya, said that the study tour was aimed at helping the trainees equip themselves with skills to fight hunger.

"We organized a study tour for these women as part of a hunger-free campaign by encouraging them to ensure that they increase food production in their respective districts”
He said that the tour is also part of capacity building through which beneficiaries learn a variety of modern farming techniques in the agriculture sector in the country.

While at Gako, the trainees were trained in animal rearing, kitchen gardening skills and the use of organic fertilizers.
Safiya Uwimbazi, a resident of Busasamana sector in Nyanza District who was among the trainees said "I am really impressed with this study tour because I have learnt how to increase agriculture production on my piece of land and I will go back and pass on the skills and knowledge I have acquired here to my fellow farmers.”

Currently Action Aid is working with women farmers in Nyanza, Musanze, Karongi, Nyaruguru and Gisagara districts.
