PARIS Nelson and his back room staff have exactly one week to find a perfect replacement for Junior hoops’ leading point guard Patrice Twagirayezu.

The 17-year-old sprained his knee during one of last week’s training sessions and it is not clear if he will recover in time for the continental showpiece that is being hosted in Rwanda for the very first time.

One of Nelson’s assistants Cliff Owuor has sounded the alarm bells saying that they are running out of time and options.

"For now, we are using make shift point guards because Patrice is injured but we are keeping our fingers crossed. Should he fail to recover in time, we shall move on to plan B,” the Kenyan tactician conceded.

The junior hoops lost the first of three friendlies matches yesterday. Playing against the national senior team, the juniors lost out 59-71 but Owuor maintains that there were a lot of positives to carry from the game.

"The offense is finally taking shape. The coordination is there although more work still needs to be done,” the APR tactician added.

The Afrobasket event, which throws off next Friday, will bring together twelve teams including Algeria, Tunisia, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Mali, Angola, Zimbabwe, Gabon, Congo Brazzaville, hosts Rwanda and defending champions, Egypt.
Teams are expected to start arriving on October 6.
