NYAGATARE - Nyagatare district has earmarked Rwf50 million for the rehabilitation of six bridges in the district, an official has said.

Early this month, residents appealed to the district for intervention after a number of bridges across the district were reported to be in a ‘sorry’ state.

Speaking in an interview with The New Times, the district Vice Mayor in charge of Economic Affairs, Enock Byabashaija, said that the response by the district authorities is an indication of the importance that local authorities attach to the development of infrastructure in the district.

"We have earmarked Rwf50 million for rehabilitation of over six bridges in the districts. This demonstrates the importance we attach to the development of infrastructure in the district”, he added.

The New Times had reported that some sectors of the district had been nearly cut off as a result of the deplorable state of the bridges.

The rundown state of the bridges had affected many businesses in the area. However, the vice mayor said that though the planned renovation of the bridges was still at the tendering stage, the bridges that were most in need of repair have since been temporarily repaired.

"We selected the bridges within the district that required emergency rehabilitation; and carried out temporary repairs as we wait for the tender processes to be finalized, after which there shall be final rehabilitation.” he said.
