NYAMASHEKE - St Joseph’s Secondary School in Nyamasheke District, yesterday, officially launched their Media Club which, administrators say, has helped to maintain discipline among students.

The club was initiated by the Ministry of Information that provided studio equipment like a computer, recorder and speakers. The school’s media club has up to 200 members, broadcasting various programmes within the school and its neighbourhood.

"We have been able to entertain, educate and sensitise our fellow students every weekend, with the help of this media club,” said Venuste Maniraguha, the Club’s president.
The club also runs a weekly newspaper, featuring news from around the country and foreign news.

"We now know how to use advanced technology to our benefit,” said Dinah Uwimana, a club member.

"I have been granted the chance to practice journalism since it’s my dream profession,” said Radjab Harerimana, the Executive Secretary of the club.

Brother Alfred Businini, the school’s discipline master, said the club has helped maintain discipline among students.
"Broadcasting has done the magic of transforming and sensitizing students. Currently, teachers face fewer problems of students dodging classes or involved in cases of indiscipline,” said Brother Businini.

The school assists the club by providing airtime for the MTN modem and also gives members time to gather news.
The media club still lacks computer programs like adobe which they say would aid in effective writing and editing.

The students also requested the Ministry of Information to facilitate training in news gathering and writing.
