MUSANZE — Police in Musanze on Monday burnt an assortment of impounded goods at a ceremony witnessed by hundreds of residents.
The items included 15kgs of marijuana, 500kgs of counterfeit soap and over 2500 litres of illegal potent gin commonly known as kanyanga and chief waragi.
The liquor was reportedly smuggled into the country from Uganda while the soap and drugs were impounded from business men who had imported from DR Congo.
The district mayor Celestin Karabayinga, warned residents about the dangers of drugs and asked them to be vigilant while buying products from neighbouring countries, to avoid counterfeit.
The items were impounded within a period of four months last year, according to police, and the illegal dealers have since been arrested.
Drug trafficking being illegal in the country, it carries maximum sentence of five years imprisonment on conviction.
