Kigali City Council has allocated Rwf 5 billion to erect street lights on several roads in the city, stretching up a distance of 64 km. The funds will also see the old street lights replaced with new ones. 

Bruno Rangira, Kigali city Director of Media and Communication, said the construction works have already started on some roads. The project is scheduled to end next year.

Among the roads to be covered but currently in the study phase are; City centre-Nyabugogo-Kanogo, Gisozi Memorial Centre-ULK-FAWE-Kagugu, Giporoso-Kabeza-Rubilizi and Nyarutarama-Kibagabaga-Kimironko.

Others are Kimironko Taxi Park to Zindiro and Kimironko market to Kigali Parents, Nyandungu-Airport junction, Sonatubes-Kicukiro centre-Nyanza memorial site, Rugunga-SEGEM-Gikondo-Nyenyeri-Rujugiro, Kimicanga-USA embassy, Nyabugogo-Gatsata-Karuruma, Giporoso-Remera taxi park-Rwahama house and Sonatubes-Gisementi (stone paved road).

Nyabugogo-Giti cy’ Inyoni and Nyabugogo market to Muhima 1930 Prison and several roads in the Central Business Disrict will also be covered.

The installation of street lights along Kimisagara and Paul VI, the other roads covered in the project, are so far complete. The project, Rangira said, will be funded by both the central government and Kigali city.

The city streets’ lighting project, however, does not include the 103 km roads to be constructed during the 2010/2011 financial year in Kigali city.

"Currently, the city is in the process of beginning a study for lighting up these roads as well as mobilizing the required funds,” Rangira said.

Kigali City Council has also encouraged the population to put up security lights on their fences and within their neighborhoods.
