Iconic Rwandan music singer and songwriter Abdoul Makanyaga is back home after he was discharged from hospital where he was being treated for prostate illness, The New Times has learnt.
The renowned singer of Karahanyuze (Rwandan old school music) was hospitalised at the University Teaching Hospital of Kigali (CHUK) where he was taken on December 23, 2022.
The New Times spoke to Jane Uwimana, the Chairperson and Managing Director of Vanginganzo CBC, a musicians' company of which Abdoul Makanyaga is a board member and she said that the illness was a result of standing up long hours.
"Makanyaga is back home and better; however, he will take a six month break to fully recover. He will not be performing or recording in the studio,” she said.
The 75-year old musician was born and raised in Huye District, and has been doing local music for over 50 years since he joined the industry at the age of 20 in 1967.
He rose to stardom through the Inkumburwa Band which existed from 1989 to 1991.
