A top Rwandan gynaecologist has underlined the importance of regular medical checkups for cervical cancer, adding that an existing national five-year strategy will go a long way in combating the disease.

Dr. Eugene Ngoga of King Faysal Hospital was speaking, this week, during a conference on cervical cancer in Kampala, Uganda.

He said that 47 out of every 1000 women in Rwanda (2.7 percent) suffer from cervical cancer.

Ngoga observed that the Rwandan government had devised appropriate mechanisms to fight the disease, including sensitizing women to carry out medical screening.
"The Government will, among other things, adopt screening methods for women and younger girls in the country. This, I am sure, will help to curb the spread of the disease.
He said Rwanda would learn from other countries’ experience during the conference.

The conference attracted participants from Rwanda, Cameroon, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
