RUSIZI – Shagasha Tea factory yesterday donated 40 cows to genocide widows in Giheke Sector, Rusizi district.
The support was part of a tribute to the company’s former workers who were brutally massacred during the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi.

"We intended to donate these cows during the commemoration period but it wasn’t possible. This contribution should be a symbol of solidarity with those that the genocide deprived of their beloved ones,” said Anthony Butera Director General of Rwanda Tea Development Authority.

Butera called upon all Rwandans to be instrumental in helping genocide survivors to overcome fear and uncertainty about their future.

Jean Damascène Gasarabwe, Manager of Shagasha Tea factory, promised that the company would continue to support genocide survivors.

"Our assistance does not end here. We shall work closely with the authorities in addressing the survivors’ problems,” he said.

Rusizi Mayor, Fabian Sindayiheba, said, "Caring for survivors should be a joint responsibility. Anyone is free to give what they have to ensure the well-being of genocide widows and orphans.” Excited beneficiaries outlined the problems that the support from the tea factory would help them address.

"We have finally been blessed with a secure source of milk production that should significantly impact on our standard of living, while manure will boost our farms’ produce during the new season,” said one of the beneficiaries.
