We reported, yesterday, that the Chinese government will finance the construction of a $10 million vocational training institute in Muko Sector, Musanze District.

The Chinese Ambassador said that his government decided to support human resource development, since skilled labour is key to Rwanda’s future plans.

Investing in vocational training will indeed enhance the country’s workforce because such institutes impart hands-on skills. Students in vocational schools undergo extensive practical training which enables them to either create their own jobs, or easily find employment, once they have graduated.

Not everyone has the opportunity to go through the traditional formal education system. For those who miss out, the vocational institutes offer a perfect alternative. There have been cases whereby children drop out of school for various reasons and end up living on the streets or giving up hope in life. With vocational institutions, they can still enroll and become productive citizens who not only live a regular life, but also contribute to the development of the country.

The government, today, has put focus on vocational programs. A special department, the Workforce Development Authority, was set up to ensure proper implementation of the program.

All this shows that vocational schools are an integral part of the country’s journey to development. With support from all levels, people should consider acquiring the skills offered by the institutions.
