MUHANGA - Residents of Nyamabuye sector, Muhanga district have raised complaints over the increasing number of robberies in the area.

The robberies have been attributed to the increasing activities and number of people in Gitarama town, Nyamabuye sector and decline in security patrols in most villages.

Reports indicate that most robbers target television sets, mattresses and money. The burglars allegedly dig through house walls while the occupants are fast asleep, and sweep houses empty. This takes place especially on weekends.

While commenting on the trend, residents slammed local leaders for failing to organise night patrols, yet each family is asked to pay Rwf 1,000 as a monthly contribution towards security.

"There are no more night patrols being carried out in the community. This is why thugs are able to break into houses and rob the occupants. There is no need to pay for security since nothing is being done about it,” said one angry resident whose house had been robbed the night before.

Security officials say four people were recently arrested in connection with robbery.
According to the police, the night patrols have been hampered by inadequate involvement of community leaders.

"We have reports that the patrols have not been operational and residents have refused to give their contributions. The local leaders have not been very helpful, either, but the Police is looking into the matter,” District Police Commander, Supt. Désiré Tuyizere commented.
