RUSIZI - The Mayor of Rusizi district, Fabian Sindayiheba, last week commended Muslims for their calmness and hygiene during the fasting period which ended last Friday.

While addressing hundreds of Muslims who had gathered at the Kamembe Mosque for Eid el Fitr celebrations, the Mayor encouraged them to keep up the discipline.

"I call on you to continue maintaining hygiene, development and good behaviour. It shouldn’t end with the fasting period,” Sindayiheba said.

The Muslims promised to live exemplary lives, even after fasting. "The thirty days of fasting are aimed at teaching Muslims best practices which are tolerance and being helpful to the community,” said Sheikh Musa Sindayigaya, a representative sent by the Mufti of Rwanda.
The Muslims invited their neighbours, including non-Muslims to share food with them.

The head of the Muslim community in Rusizi and Nyamasheke districts, Imam Adam Nyange, emphasised discipline as the way forward for every Muslim, saying it would attract more people to Islam.
The Muslim thanked the government for according them equal rights.

"We are no longer referred to as Swahilis, as we were in the past. We are happy that we are no longer left out of government projects,” said Mzee Idris Nkundabandi, on behalf of the Muslim community.
