Rwanda’s prowess at the inaugural Cecafa youth championships will be tested when she clashes with Uganda in the first semi-final this afternoon at national U-17 football team is Prince Louis Rwagasore stadium in Burundi.
Though both teams displayed outstanding performances at the group stage, the local football governing body, Ferwafa sports commissioner Bonny Nsabimana believes Rwanda will progress to the final.
"They have had a fine display in the group stage and I think that has improved their confidence in the competition,” Nsabimana said.
The official further noted that a drastic improvement has been noted in the team increasing Rwanda’s chances of producing a formidable team for the 2009 U-20 Nations’ Cup that will be staged in Rwanda.
Rwanda finished second in Group A after a 1-1 draw in their final group game against hosts, Burundi.
Uganda’s U-17 team won Group B of the Cecafa Youth Championships following a 5-0 victory over Zanzibar on Thursday.
Burundi takes on Kenya in the other semi-final.
Rwanda’s duo of Ernest Kwizera and Hegyman Ngoma are the leading top scorer at the championship with three goals.
