NYARUGURU-After the opening of a new petrol station, Nyaruguru district fuel vendors say there is a reduction in the amount of profits.

Initially, traders petrol in jerry cans 120 kilometres away in Huye District which prompted them to hike the vending prices, according to Alphonse Nkurunziza, the private sector leader in Nyaruguru.

Now pump prices stand at Rwf 930 down from Rwf 1110.
Residents say the recent opening of the petrol station has been reflected in the reduction on charges of other services, including transport fare.

Taxi operators say before the opening of the new station, they bought petrol from area vendors at high cost, prompting them to hike transport fare.

"This petrol station has saved us a lot. Personally, I could spend more than Rwf 15,000 to reach Huye the nearest town to refuel. But now because it’s close to me, I spend no money on transport,” said one official at Nyaruguru district.

Clement Mugiraneza, who works at the new station, said the service was long overdue and they receive many customers, including drivers and motorcyclists.

Nyaruguru Mayor, Felix Sibomana, told The New Times that the station has reduced the previously high risk of fire accidents that could occur as a result of vending fuel in shops.
