On Tuesday 15, East African Growers Rwanda (EAG Rwanda) exported its first shipment of snow peas to the United Kingdom.

The snow peas were shipped to the UK where they will be bought and sold on by Tesco, a leading UK supermarket. EAG Rwanda sells the peas at approximately $5 per kilo (Frw2,700).

EAG Rwanda, a subsidiary of East African Growers Kenya, was set up in September 2007. It has one hectare of snow peas. It increases yields by buying from independent farmers in Kaniga Sector, Gicumbi District. There is to be a shipment of snow peas to the UK twice a week. It is hoped that his will increase to three times weekly in due course

An EAG Rwanda representative, Aimable Gakirage, said that the company was prompted to grow snow peas in Rwanda after the completion of the cold room at Kigali International Airport.

Rwanda has demonstrated huge potential for the production and export of snow peas that are in high demand in international markets. "The success of East African Growers Rwanda in this business is sure to attract other investors," Gakirage said.
