The remarks were made at the closure of a month-long training seminar on Gender Based Violence (GBV).
Elloi Munyankindi, the sector’s executive secretary, stated that local authorities are convinced that many people practiced GBV out of ignorance.
"Many of these people have never known that GBV was punishable. Some men even thought that battering their wives was an unquestionable right,” added Collette Nibakure, one of the trainers.
Fabian Ntahondereye, another trainer and methodist pastor in the area, emphasised the need to put God first in the fight against GBV.
The training seminar which attracted over 500 participants was organised following reports of increasing GBV cases in the sector. It received backing from Nyamasheke district and Bushekere Sector.
