GICUMBI - District authorities have hired a contractor to build a water tunnel to control flood waters from Byumba market, which normally affect residents of Rwasama village during the rainy season.

According to the district officer in charge of infrastructure Eng. Moussa Nzabandora, the problem occurred in the last season due to the fact that local authorities had failed to hire a contractor to do the job.

"The problem has now been sorted out as we now have a contractor to do the job,” he said.

"The project is being funded by Community Development Fund (CDF) and supervised by the district.”
He explained that the flowing waters will be channelled to a 30 cubic- meter  storage channel with capacity to accommodate 30, 000 litres of water, dug 150 metres away from the market.

A resident of Rwasama village, Venant Mutabazi, hailed CDF and district authorities for finally finding a remedy for the floods.

"We are extremely happy that the problem,  which had devastated our houses and crops for a long time is to be sorted out,” said Mutabazi.

The site supervisor for the contractors, Athanase Havugimana, said the water tunnel construction works shall last four months.

"We started work on August 3 and expect to complete it in four months’ time,” said
Havugimana.
