MUHANGA - the Governor of the Southern Province, Fidèle Ndayisaba has urged local leaders to implement and monitor activities related to general hygiene.

Ndayisaba was addressing representatives of the provincial coordination committee, at a meeting held at Gitarama Cultural Centre, yesterday.

He pointed vout that hygiene has been poor in most hospitals, churches, schools and roadsides.

He singled out the National University of Rwanda, the Rwanda-Burundi Akanyaru border post and Rusatira health centre as some of the areas that need immediate attention.

"Hygiene is a priority and major problem. Let’s try to implement strategies on hygiene to give residents better welfare,” Ndayisaba said.

He added that mobilization and communication with residents is critical in the process of implementing the strategies, saying that the province would evaluate the outcome within one month.

Several mayors said that the activities have been launched in most of their respective districts.

The Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Agnes Kalibata, who also attended the meeting, took the opportunity to hail the province for its outstanding performance in the previous farming season, but said that the quality of coffee has been declining in the area.

"There is no compromise on the evidently growing economy. More effort should be centred on household levels and emphasis should be given to empowering the farmers,” the minister said.

She emphasized on the use of household survey to propel aspects of land consolidation (with five hectares per village) and improve agricultural activities in the province.
