LOCAL cyclists have stepped up training ahead of this year’s Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, India from October 3 -14.

Rwanda will field a six-man team led by Adrien Niyonshuti, who is currently contracted by one of South Africa’s top cycling clubs MTN Energade.

Other riders on the team include four-time Tour of Rwanda champion Abraham Ruhumuriza, Nathan Byukusenge, Nicodem Habiyambere, Gasore Hategeka and Obed Ruvogera.

Team Rwanda Coach Jonathan ‘Jock’ Boyer has revealed that two American trainers- Clark Natwick and Scott Nydam have been contracted to help on teamwork, sprints, and strength training.

"The boys have been training for several months but we now want to intensify our training regimes when Nydam and Natwick come,” Boyer said.

The pair arrives next week and will immediately get down to serious business.

"Our target is to finish inside the top ten,” Boyer added.
Natwick is a former cyclo-cross cyclist. He was U.S’ senior national cyclo-cross champion in 1981, 1986 and 1987. Following his success, an annual race (Grand Prix Clark Natwick) held at San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park was named after him.

On the other hand, Nydam is a professional rider with the pro BMC team.
