GISAGARA - Poultry farmers in the southern province have appealed to the Rwanda Resources Development Authority (RARDA) for more day-old chicks in order to enable the development of their trade.

They made the appeal during the closure of a two day training about poultry breeding and business in Gisagara, organized by RARDA.

"We as ordinary people can’t manage to produce enough chicks; the challenge in poultry farming is getting day old chicks. The national hatchery of Rubirizi produces few chicks considering requests from breeders, so we can’t improve our breeding if there is no solution to that problem,” said Justin Bizimana.

Bizimana, commended RARDA for organizing the training which he said would boost their trade.

Another farmer, Marie Vianney Kaligirwa from Nyamagabe district added that breeders still experienced lack of medicine to treat poultry diseases.

Dr Landry Ndriko  Mayigane, who is in charge of the poultry development in the country, said RARDA would soon launch two incubators in Gisagara district to serve the southern province.

The incubators will be given to Gisagara district to serve other districts. "We think this will be a solution to a problem of chicks’ shortage.”

Farmers trained were drawn from Nyamagabe ,Nyaruguru, Huye Gisagara  in south and others from Rusizi in western Rwanda.
